It’s unclear why the liquid was gushing from the top of One Liberty Place.

Updated 10:20 a.m.
A huge stream of water visible from miles away gushed from the west side of One Liberty Place on Sunday morning, soaking the Center City Philadelphia sidewalk below. The liquid continued pouring out for approximately five minutes before coming to an abrupt stop.
A security person at Liberty Place, a dual-tower skyscraper at the heart of the city, declined to comment and referred a reporter to the tenant services coordinator. No officials from Liberty Place have returned requests for comment.
The Philadelphia Water staffer who answered the emergency water line said they had not heard anything about the incident.
Also unable to confirm or deny any details about the strange occurrence was the Philadelphia Fire Dept., though a person who answered the phone told Billy Penn the department had not heard any reports relating to the water gush. Spokesperson Kathy Matheson later confirmed that “the PFD was not called to respond to this incident at Liberty Place.”
The Philadelphia Police Department has not returned Billy Penn’s requests for comment on the incident.
Philly Twitter had plenty of ideas as to what could have caused the unusual spurt.
On the serious side were suggestions that “slosh tanks” sometimes used for ballast in high buildings had broken. However, while the Comcast Center famously has a large amount of water at the top, there’s no information to indicate that’s the case at One Liberty.
Other ideas included a burst pipe in the fire suppression system. Something like that likely would have triggered a fire alarm and caused an alert sent to the PFD, which reportedly did not happen.
And then there were the memes. So many memes. Never change, Philly.
